royall is feeling optimistic about the UK economy! With the uncertainty of the general election now behind us, business activities are picking up, which in turn is unlocking hiring decisions. The recruitment industry and labour market are clearly showing signs of growth. Employers in London are particularly optimistic and plan to increase permanent hiring.

According to the most recent Jobs Outlook survey, London employers intend to grow their permanent workforce by a net +33.2 over the next three months, significantly higher than the rest of the UK, which stands at +18.4.

Over the next four to 12 months, London employers also expect greater permanent hiring growth, with a net +35.3 compared to +15.3 for the rest of the country.

Additionally, 29.3% of London employers reported they plan to "greatly increase" their permanent headcount in the short to medium term, much higher than 6.9% and 4.7% of employers in the rest of the UK for short- and medium-term hiring, respectively.

Signs of this positive shift are already apparent. The REC’s August 2024 'Report on Jobs' for London revealed an increase in permanent staff appointments in July, marking the end of a 21-month decline. This turnaround signals that London’s labour market is regaining momentum. While the broader UK outlook remains uncertain, London has seen a rise in job vacancies and demand for both permanent and temporary workers, the first in 18 and five months, respectively.

This recent surge in hiring intentions, along with the increase in permanent placements and overall vacancies in London, is a welcome and encouraging sign for the UK’s labour market and recruitment industry. The

growth points to strong demand for skilled labour across a range of sectors, reflecting businesses' optimism about the future.

Such trends often extend to other parts of the UK, potentially sparking similar hiring practices in other regions. London’s job market recovery sets a positive tone for the UK’s overall economic outlook and employment landscape.
